128 year-old flour mill closing

A 128 year-old Topeka flour mill is closing.

Horizon Milling (a Cargill Foods Affiliate) announced it will close its Topeka facility on December 1, 2010.

Employees found out about the closing Friday.

The mill was built in 1882, and company officials said it can no longer efficiently compete without extensive and costly equipment upgrades.

Flour customers who currently get their supply from the Topeka mill will be supplied by other facilities.

More bad news for Topeka. Sad that the city couldn't offer them some incentives to continue operations in Topeka.

Perhaps they just ran the place into the ground, squeezing every last ounce of use out of it? All with the plan of dumping when it was rung out.

ROTFLMAO @ Greggzee.

After 128 years in operation Divemaster, I'm sure the place was rung out.

But if the City can find incentives for Hill's, SBG, Payless, Frito-Lay, Target & Home Depot... why not Horizon Milling?

After operating in Topeka 128 years, you would think maybe the City would offer Horizon/Cargill some incentive to stay.

But you're right Divemaster the town is corrupt.

What... build them a new one? I don't think so! Mayybe they should have used some of them profits to upgrade. I wouldn't want to spend a dollar on it.

No, it was Duffy, Prisner and pal's are the ones that screwed the tax payers. Henry was just trying to make a buck, he was just the tail end of the donkey. Not one of those $190,000 Town homes has been sold and trust me... J building will never be built, the only commercial enterprise is the sub shop and how much you wanna bet it will be closing? I wonder what ol' Duffy is doing now, is he even still in town? I wonder which bank backed that loan? Yes, the tax payer is going to take this one in the ass.

Maybe the next time you hear about the city council talk about a partner ship with developer's you might just go... hmmm. Of course O'bama's recession didn't help any, lol.

Next time I see ya divey I will tell you the rest of the story.

The City provided "incentives" for Hill's, Frito-Lay, Target & Home Depot.

Generally these are tax breaks for jobs and land and construction projects. ;)

I didn't suggest the City should build them a new flour mill, but they could have offered them something to stay.

According to the union, the company is closing the Topeka mill because it's the only remaining union flour mill in the country.

I didn't say it was the unions fault.

I only quoted what the union claims was the "real" reason the flour mill is closing.

The company cited the cost to replace and upgrade equipment as the reason.
